So another year of rookie racing and yet another bunch of new faces to try and get to know. The two teams staying in the rookies who look likely to be challenging for podiums and wins this year are Pantera Racing and SMJ Racing. The former in particular started showing real signs of promise in the latter half of 2009 and are likely to be regular podium finishers this year. As always there are a number of new teams that look rapid and none more so than the eventual pole winners The Skid Marks.

This trio of drivers who have competed in a small number of Open Endurance races looked quick all throughout practice and took pole comfortably from Team Dynamics. However, the latter was one of several teams demoted to the rear of the grid for overtaking under yellow flags in practice so this promoted MNR Akita v1 to second and Release the Fury to third.

The Skid Marks lead off the line and rapidly extended their lead ahead of the chasing pack. MNR Akita v1, Pony Express, Release the Fury and Pantera all gave chase but could do nothing to stop the leaders from disappearing into the realms of the Inters field. After their penalty in qualifying, team Dynamics were making short work of the traffic and were up to third by the 10 minute mark.

With the track now dry after the morning rain, it was down to the pit stops to shake the running order up and as usual there was a variety in the level of proficiency in the pits. By just over half distance and with 3 of the mandatory fuel windows out of the way it was MNR and The Skid Marks who were leading the way. Pantera were giving chase as were Team Dynamics but the win looked to be between the top 2.

Release the Fury were showing fairly good form and found themselves mingling with the top 3 by the half distance mark. They would remain close to the top six all race and score some valuable points towards the championship.

A team not having a good day was Raggo Racing. Oli Goodacre suffered a nightmare of a day as he explained.

“We had an ace kart but got bumped down to near the back in qualifying. By my stint we were doing OK but I had the worst stint I've ever had in a Club100 kart. I had four incidents all due to me driving beyond my abilities when encountering slower drivers. We also spilt a lot of fuel at the first pit stop, leaving my gonads burning for a twenty-five minute stint. At least it appears to have killed the crabs.”

Well I’m glad to hear that your pubic lice problem has been cured Oli and my advice would be not to touch a girl from the Rochester or Maidstone area again.

Back to the less amusing but more important subject of racing and as the laps rose into triple figures, The Skid Marks had closed down and passed MNR Akita v1 for the lead and started pulling away. After 163 laps of racing it was The Skid Marks who crossed the line to taste victory followed by MNR Akita v1. Pantera Racing took a well deserved third ahead of the recovering Team Dynamics. SMJ Racing scored some good points with fifth and The Wife does not know how much it costs (up for nomination for the gayest team name in the Club100 championship award) rounded out the top 6.

It was a dominant performance for The Skid Marks all round with pole position and a comfortable race win. The team were in confident mood after the race and quite rightly fancy their chances for the rest of the season.

“Other than a handful of Open races, we did the last couple of rookie races last year and we came fourth so we thought we might have a chance but two of us have only been karting about twenty times so we’re feeling pretty pleased with ourselves. We’re hoping that we can keep this up and finish in the top three at the end of the season.”
