I would like to start this race report with an apology. In the previous report I made reference to Matt Kavanagh being viciously wiped out by one of the Akita teams, which he apparently told me not to publish. Of course I did publish it. But having brought it up here I’ve technically now mentioned it twice so I’m not sure whether I need to apologise twice. Anyway, he informed me at this race that they were being particularly dangerous but told me not to publish that either. Because I’ve mentioned this as well I guess my morals will now be brought into question. Still, this is the same Mr Kavanagh who took a dump in the girls’ toilets at Ellough Park so I’ll leave it up to the rest of the readers to decide who’s got the lowest morals. We love you Matt!

Anyway, back to more interesting matters of racing and qualifying saw Keen As Mustard take pole position ahead of Gaucho Productions who are really starting to look like regular front runners now. Having missed the previous race, it was good to see the Wing Nuts up there in third. Powered by Healy twin turbos, this was their most competitive showing yet. The rest of the top places were filled with the familiar names of Rum Racing, BIX2, Lucid Initiatives and Team Pikey Racing, who were also returning after missing the last 2 races. Having won the last race, Overdraft Racing were perplexed to find themselves down in 20th. Both Broken Spanners and Farce India would start from the pitlane after changing their karts after qualifying.

Gudders was surprised to be informed of his pole position as he was getting out of his kart. He was nevertheless pleased and was hoping to take advantage of the position.

“I am very surprised because I didn’t think I got a good lap together. There was a lot of traffic out there but obviously I did something right. We’ll be looking to stay up front because obviously Drive Fast Don’t Crash aren’t here so we could really do with collecting maximum points and try to close the gap down a bit. Our strategy was always going to depend on where we qualified so as we’re at the front I expect we’ll have a long first stint. As long as we stay out of trouble and keep ahead of the pack we should be alright.”

The Wing Nuts were delighted with their qualifying performance and were looking to carry their great turn of speed into the race.

“It is a great kart. It’s got a great engine so hopefully it will be a good race. A top five would be nice but we’ll have to see how things pan out.”

Keen As Mustard maintained their lead off the line ahead of Gaucho with BIX2 and Wing Nuts following them through. All of the front runners made it through the first lap unscathed and they settled down into a rhythm. Overdraft Racing meanwhile were making their way through the field and looking likely to prove a threat later in the race.

Having deserted another site and sold their dodgy caravan to some unsuspecting punter, the Pikey’s return to the track was looking rather promising. They were looking very competitive and looked set for a good haul of points.

“We were in the pits for about 10 minutes in practice because the guys ran out of spare karts but the new kart they’ve given us is a lot better, although it is a bit long in the brakes so we’ll have to see how we get on.”

Lucid Initiatives were obviously struggling to get to grips with the circuit and made little impression as the race wore on. The ever vivacious Paul Bacon cheerfully gave an honest verdict of his team’s performance.

“We are not cutting the mustard today. That’s all I can really say about it. I don’t want to say any more.”

Wing Nuts also had problems and dropped to the mid field. They also had quite an amusing pit stop when a driver from the Broken Spanners team was a bit of a… well… spanner! First he drove into Peter Healy and sent him flying. He then decided to park next to them at the fuel bay so Wing Nuts couldn’t get out. Funny to watch but probably not so entertaining for the guys.

Gaucho Productions were having another solid day and ran as high as second at one point, despite hitting one of the mechanics in the pits. Minimum Traction, Rapid Hire and the team that love the KOKS were all running steadily in the mid field. The latter having released their trouble-making team mate from his contract were hoping for better results according to Ashley Evans.

Keen As Mustard lost a potential win after a spin from Paul Summers. This allowed Overdraft Racing to pull out a huge lead over Rum Racing and BIX2. However, BIX2’s bad luck continued as they lost a certain podium position late in the race when their sidepod came loose and they had to stop for repairs. A black flag a few laps later for Pete Bunton overtaking another kart under yellows dropped them further down the order.

Overdraft Racing made it 2 wins out of 2 as they stormed to victory almost an entire lap ahead of the grateful Rum Racing. Team Pikey Racing took a surprising 3rd having been very quiet during the course of the afternoon.

Despite Stuart martin being comically reprimanded for poor driving by the team that finished 12 laps behind them in last place, it was another convincing win for the Overdraft boys. Stuart:

“All credit to Geoff and Tim for this one. I ballsed up qualifying and they brought us right back up and into the lead. From therein we just brought it home. It was a really good performance. We all struggled a bit in practice and qualifying and the kart wasn’t great but we all adjusted our driving style, All the pit stops went well apart from one where we struggled to get the fuel cap on but other than that is was okay.”
