Away from the heated championship battle, it was the ever improving Release The Fury who took the rookie pole and were well up there on the overall grid. AAA Taxi, who won here earlier in the year, were again looking speedy up there in second. The three title protagonists BIX2, Lotus Power were and the New Yorkers were next up which made an exciting prospect for the afternoon.
Lotus Power’s AJ tried to justify his outrageous driver recruitment programme:
“I tried everyone who’s raced with us so far and it came to the last minute and I just couldn’t get anyone else to race with us so I phoned up Tim. It was either that or phone up an ex-British champion and I thought that was a bit too much. In any case it’s still going to be tough for the championship because we’re only going to be able to get one dropped score. We’re still looking for another driver for the remaining rounds and for next year.”
Release The Fury’s Jamie was in confident mood on the grid and was aiming to convert pole position into victory.
“I reckon we can win. I’m fairly confident of that. We’ve got a good team so providing we can have a clean race with no spins we can do the job.”
AAA Taxi got the jump on Release The Fury and held the lead round the first lap. Team Incredible made a good start to slot into third from 6th on the grid. Lotus Power’s John Goddard threw it off the road on lap two which would be the first of a catalogue of problems for the team during the race. BIX2 were again one of the first to pit, making a strategic early race pit stop while the fuel bays were relatively free and to try and get out in clear air.
By the time all the first round of pit stops were out of the way, Release The Fury were well clear up front with Fear Are We Wacing well up there as well. BB09 and Monday Night Racing were also setting good pace as was the returning Rapid Hire Racing, who were working their way up through the field and looking on course for some good points.
After a three month layoff it was good to see Matt Kavanagh back with his Rapid Hire outfit. They were indeed proving to be rapid and Matt was in good spirits during the race.
“I’m personally having a lot of fun. There was a bit of tussling up at Christmas corner and I just about managed to keep it going and lost a few places but from qualifying in twenty-sixth I think we managed to get up to second at one stage and are looking good for a podium. Hopefully we can keep it together and it looks like our strategy has worked.”
Back with the championship battle and it was not going well for any of the title contenders. With their premier stand-in driver proving to be as useful as a Royal Mail postman, Lotus Power were struggling and then AJ controversially collided with The New Yorkers towards the end of the race – blaming fading brakes for the incident. The New Yorkers were less than impressed with events.
“It is a bad day at the office. The first half of the race was a bit of a disaster because we had a black flag for hitting someone going into the boot and we also spun at Christmas corner so pretty disappointing. We got taken out my Lotus Power who said that they had brake problems but that has really ruined our race now.”
BIX2 were fairing even worse. A source close to the team revealed that Dyll has been using hypnosis tapes to help him lose weight for the benefit of his racing career and these proved to be ineffective as his immense weight caused the seat to squash the fuel line which resulted in the kart intermittently cutting out. Davies:
“basically, we had a good start and then got taken out at the pit corner but managed to keep it going but we lost a lot of places. We were way down but managed to drive up to second in class. We than had a problem with the seat because a bolt had come off the seat and was crushing the fuel line so whenever we came out of the boot, because of the weight distribution, it was cutting off the fuel and we had no power whatsoever. I was losing two seconds a lap at one point but it’s the first mechanical failure we’ve had all year and these things happen. The only consolation really is that our rivals are having a bad day too.”
Team Incredible were incredibly upset after the race. Faisal Haneef gave his views:
“First of all we got a really unfair black flag. The guy spun in front of one of our drivers and they just assumed that it was us and gave us a black flag. Then some guy did a kamikaze move on me, took me out and my kart died and then we had three really bad pit stops but my team mates saved the day really.”
Up front, release The Fury took a commanding victory ahead of the impressive BB09. The returning Rapid Hire Racing took a well deserved third while Lotus Power recovered well to take a controversial fourth. The New Yorkers and BIX2, after their problems, finished 8th and 9th respectively, leaving the championship wide open and certain to go down to the last race.
Release The Fury were satisfied with a job well done and their prospects are looking good for next season.
“No spins and good pit stops so we are pretty pleased with it. Hopefully we can get another two in the last two races. We’re not really in the hunt and are just doing it for a bit of fun now really but it’s nice to get a win”
