Synopsis

In "Star Wars: The Phantom Menace", Palpatine tells Amidala that "the Chancellor has little real power...he is mired down by baseless accusations of corruption". A manufactured scandal surrounds him. In this prequel novel, which takes place shortly before the events of "The Phantom Menace", Valorum struggles with his fall from power. As part of this struggle, he has the Jedi Council send some Jedi Knights to a political hotspot, in the hopes of solving a problem and reconsolidating his power.

What People Think

Good political thriller - 19-Sep-07
Darth Depravus
I quite enjoyed this book. As well as being a good political thriller it gives the reader a good introduction to Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan and gives a bit more depth to their relationship. We also learn more about the events that lead up to The Phantom Menace and more of the plot surrounding the Trade federation's involvement with Darth Sidious.

I found some of the political story line a bit hard to follow at time, probably more because I'm not that interested in politics. I also found certain plot points a bit silly and unnecessary.

All in all it was an entertaining, if sometimes a bit slow, read and well worth buying if you are a fan of the prequels.

A well conceived prelude - 03-Nov-06
Jedi Apprentice
I really enjoyed this book. I thought it was a good lead up to The Phantom Mencae. We get to see the events leading up to Episode 1: Valorum's struggle to retain his power, Darth Sideous and his scheming with the Trade Federation, and of course we are introduced to Ob-Wan and Qui-Gon (unless you have read the jedi Apprentice series by Jude Watson that is!).

As a book, James Luceno again does the Star Wars universe proud. I found that the visualisation and characterisation were superb. It was almost like watching a film. A definate must for all Star Wars fans!
